Winner Of The Hand Engraved Card Competition 2021 Announced

Working together for the first time, the Hand Engravers Association and Baddeley Brothers are proud to declare the winner of their inaugural greeting card competition. A skill so rare that there was recently only a handful of craftsmen left, has been given a boost by workshops and competitions that have brought the ancient craft of copperplate engraving back into the limelight. And now with support from a specialist printer, one such competition winner will see his engraving of Santa Claus go into production as Christmas Cards. Andy Beavan-Smith’s work caught the eye of the Hand Engravers Association in their recent

The Hand Engravers Association Celebrates 10 Years

The Hand Engravers Association of Great Britain celebrated its 10th anniversary with a VIP tour of the Clockmakers’ Museum in September. Sir George White Bt FSA, Keeper of the Collection, treated members to a fascinating tour, packed with wonderful insights and anecdotes on London’s clock making trade from 1600 to the present day. Highlights included John Harrison’s marine chronometer and a four-month duration longcase clock by the father of English watchmaking, Thomas Tompion.  Historically, the clockmaking and hand engraving trades have always been intrinsically linked, with clockmakers and engravers working alongside each other, often in the same studio. Many of

Could you help shape the future of the Hand Engravers Association

Are you proud of Britain’s hand engraving heritage? Will you help a small organisation make a big difference?  At the AGM in June 2022 our current Chair, Tim Roberts, announced his intention to step down at the end of the year. Tim joined the Association as Honorary Treasurer, led us through the change into a CIO and also kindly took on the role of Chair in 2019. We are therefore looking to recruit for two voluntary positions on the trustee board: Chair and Hon Treasurer . Although previous experience of a similar role is desirable, both roles are supported by the

This March the exhibition Celebrating Eighty: Art in the Hand at the Goldsmiths’ Centre unites eighty contemporary art medals by students from more than a dozen UK art colleges with work by renowned Iranian sculptor, jeweller, writer and designer Parviz Tanavoli and his former students in celebration of his 80th Birthday. All exhibitors have been invited to participate in the British Art Medal Society’s 24th Student Medal Project. A surprising and challenging medium for artists and viewers alike, the modern art medal has its roots in the Renaissance tradition of making medals as hand-sized works of art. Each year over

Identifying a Mysterious Hand Tool

Please could you help to identify this hand tool? A reader’s grandfather was a gem setter in the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham and their father in law, A. R. Emerson, was a silversmith and Liveryman of the Goldsmiths’ Company. The relative has inherited a box of their tools, gravers, burnishers, etc but one tool or set of tools is defying attempts to identify satisfactorily. The photo shows just two from a set of 6 of varying sizes. We wondered if a Benchpeg reader would be able to satisfy their curiosity – and with an illustration of it's use! Contact info@benchpeg.com

Hobby gold hunter may have to hand over 'largest ever' £50,000 find

An anonymous amateur gold hunter is still waiting to be told whether Britain's largest ever gold nugget, which he found in a Scottish stream, will have to be handed over to the Crown Estate. Weighing 85.7g, the nugget which has been named the Douglas Nugget was found in an unidentified river in Scotland two years ago by an amateur prospector who has chosen to keep his identity under wraps. Its value is reckoned to be around £50,000 but under “Mines Royal” law, which sometimes requires successful bounty hunters to hand over their gold and silver booty to the Crown, the

Isla hand carves ‘bites’ from an array of juicy and enticing gemstones and creates gold plated silverwork that also appears to have been tasted, scattered with crumbs and twisted in the haste
